Kiwanis Volunteer

Studying Early Childhood Education has really given me an impact on my life and it makes my life become more meaningful and interesting. Few of my course mates and I went for a charity on year 2008. Kiwanis was a school which enrolled children with down syndrome. 7 of us including me, Yin Pei, Sin Tze, Karen, Shin Yee, Flora and Isabel woke up early in the morning to Kiwanis centre to prepare everything. We were asked to help in game stalls. Below are some of the pictures that i have taken during the carnival.

It was a memorable day for us because we got to meet children with down syndrome and we could somehow enjoy the games with them. Although it was tiring but we were all very happy and it was a meaningful experience for us. I hope that in future we have more chances to explore and attend charity and do community work to help people who are in needs. Everyone in the world deserve an oppotunity to enjoy their lives and therefor i think that we should help people who are in needs when we are capable.

My shunshines

I will post pictures of the young children that I have worked with before throughout my life in this post and share with you a little about the characteristics about them.

Left : Hermine, she is a sweet looking girl with a shy and self-protective character with her. She tends to avoid herself from people that she is not familiar with.

Right : Gaspard, a good friend of Hermine, a tough boy and he is very active. He listens to instructions but will be stubborn once in a while.

Aiden : A Vietnamese which is very small size and cheeky in the class. He loves to show his cheeky face by looking upwards and a kind of smile when the teacher is firmed with him.

Soo Bin : A korean girl who loves to smile and always spell her name out by shouting S-O-O B-I-N! Soo Bin!

Kyra : A favorite child of mine. She has a sweet smile but very fragile as she will cry very easily when she falls or when her friends pushes her.

Nolan : He loves hugging his friends and teachers with the word "squeeze" instead of "hugs"

Laura : She looks really cute when she runs! It is like jumping and runing together. She will only stick to either me or another teacher in the class and not any other teachers.

These children have given me laughness, sadness, frustrations, sweetness, happiness, craziness, and no matter what, they will be the sunshines in my heart and I have really leant a lot from them. I have learnt being patient with them, i actually somehow learn vocabulary from them as their englise is really good. I love them and i will educate them as much as i know.

My decision, my working experience

There are many courses for us to pursue and the most common ones will be business, accountancy, pharmacy, medicine, engineering etc etc. Out of these courses, I have chosen Early Childhood Education because i have a big passion on children. I love to be around with young children and take care of them as i find them are the most innocent and present from God. Whenever I feel down or unhappy, being around young children is one of the most effective ways to get rid of the stress and unhappiness as they are just so innocent to say and do anything. Although I have heard a couple of bad comments from people around me about this course, but I would just take them as advises to me and would not affect my passion on young children. So finally I have enrolled in Segi College for Early Childhood Education for Young Children on October 2007.

My first working experience with young children was in year 2008. It was the first school that i went to interview and started work. The principal paid me quite well as it was a new opening school and I am a diploma holder in Music Performance. The school was located at quite a hidden place where parents can hardly find for the school from outside. The school was new and therefor there was only few student enrolled in it. I would say that it was not really a good place for me to work as i could not learn anything from it although it was well paid. The students there were too little for me to work with and there was only worksheets. I did all the worksheets blindly with them without caring whether they understand or not. I could not apply any knowledge that I have gained from college into the school that I was working. Other than that, the principal did not really care and put much effort in the school as she had another business with her. The teachers in the school were not really disciplined as the principal did not give her out of to the school. I left the school after few months to seek for another more appropriate kindergarten.

I found the next kindergarten from the exhibition that held in Segi College. I gave my resume to almost all the schools and they are mostly Montessori schools. There was a few schools that called me to confirm the job but I have decided to work in one of the Montessori schools in Petaling Jaya area. The school has given me a good first impression as it was safe, air-conditioned, the teachers and admintrators there were friendly, the classrooms and settings fulfilled Montessori requirements and most importantly, the principal of the school was kind to showed me around the school and shared with me about her past learning experiences. I did not hesitate when the principal confirm the job with me. I was sent to become an assisstant in toddlers class. It was actuallty quite a tough job for me at first as I have no experice with working with toddlers and also diapers changing or washing them up when they do big business. I brought myself up by listening to other teachers in the school and slowly I manage to work with them whole heartedly. Although sometimes they might make a lot of noise and run around the classroom, but these are the characters of toddlers and we should bare with them and learn to accept to certain levels.

Untill now I am stil working in this school and I am really happy and appreaciate the chances that the school has given to me. I fully hope that I will be able to work until the day i leave to Australia for further studies and work for this school again when I graduate.
